James Gale Tyler 1855 - 1931

Apart from a brief period of study with Archibald C. Smith in New York in 1870, James Gale Tyler was a self taught marine painter, achieving much success. His work dances with subtle light effects, making him most popular in his time, and today. He lived in New York state, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island. During his lifetime, he was widely exhibited and today his works can be seen at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, the Mariner's Museum of the New York Historical Society. and the Yale University Library. Tyler painted every America's Cup race from 1900 through 1930, and his illustrations of the event were published in Literary Digest, Harpers, and Century magazines.
