Ralph Love was born in L.A. in 1907. The most notable center of Ralph's art world was his Art Shack in Temecula, CA which he opened in the mid 1950's. This was his studio and classroom, a sanctuary where Ralph painted while listening to classical music, and where his violin was close at hand for him to play while he awaited the next wave of inspiration. |
The Art Shack no longer stands. In its place is Baily's Restaurant located at the corner of Front and Second Streets in downtown Temecula. http://www.oldtowndining.com/default.htm Although the shack is gone, the owners, Chris and Kim Baily named a patio next to their restaurant "Love's Courtyard," with an accompanying plaque. Mostly a self taught artist, Ralph did have two years of training with Sam Hyde Harris to supplement passion to paint. He is most noted for his Grand Canyon and California landscapes. He was featured on the cover of Arizona Life, which included an inside spread of his work. The late Senator Barry Goldwater owned several of Love's Grand Canyon paintings, and called him "the finest living American artist I know, and I could look at his work all day long." Another notable celebrity, Erle Stanley Gardner, commissioned Ralph to do a painting of his ranch, after both gentlemen were featured in the publication of the Frontier Museum of Temecula, California. |
His work may be viewed at the Palm Desert Museum in Palm Springs, the Northern Arizona Museum in Flagstaff, the Phillips 66 Museum in Oklahoma, the Leanin' Tree Museum in Boulder, Colorado, and the Lee Youngman Galleries in Calistoga, California.
