Ralph Baker worked as an illustrator and commercial artist for forty-five years. Beyond his working life, he created fine art oil and watercolor paintings of landscapes, mining camps in the gold country, and city scenes. Born in Deckard, Tennessee, he moved to Red Bluff, California at the age of thirteen. Soon afterward, he moved to San Francisco where he studied under Maurice Logan, and at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. In retirement, he moved to Sonora where he painted and taught. He was a member of the Society of Western Artists.
